National Philanthropy Infrastructure and Sector Mapping Initiative

Nonprofit Mexico

Context

As the nonprofit sector in Mexico expanded, organizations, companies, foundations, and community actors often lacked a clear view of who was working where and on what issues. The absence of accessible and reliable sector information limited organizations’ ability to identify credible partners, understand the landscape of services, and coordinate efforts across regions.

Without stronger information infrastructure and shared reference points, collaboration remained fragmented, smaller organizations had limited visibility, and opportunities for cross-sector coordination were frequently missed.

Engagement

AltaVia contributed to a national initiative focused on strengthening the information infrastructure of Mexico’s philanthropic sector. Working within a research team, the engagement helped structure how sector information could be organized, verified, and made accessible to nonprofits, companies, foundations, and community actors.

The work developed organizing frameworks and verification practices that improved the reliability and usability of sector information, enabling organizations to navigate the philanthropic landscape with greater clarity and confidence.

Impact

The initiative strengthened the professional foundations of nonprofit sector infrastructure in Mexico and created conditions for more consistent coordination among nonprofits, companies, and civic actors.

Organizations gained greater visibility within the national landscape and a clearer way to identify credible partners, supporting more informed collaboration and stronger cross-sector engagement across the philanthropic field.
